September 2015 Newsletter
2016 Short-course State Championships
We had 11 swimmers compete at the NSW Short course Championships over 3 days in August. Tom Oates (100m Breaststroke), Tahi Webster (50m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke) and Samantha Gregory (200m Backstroke) all swam individual races and each did some extraordinary times with Tahi a finalist in the Breaststroke. Well done to all of you.
AKAC also fielded five relay teams and each one did us proud. All swimmers smashed their entry times and the races were fabulous to watch. The Men’s 4 x 50M Medley relay on the Sunday was an extraordinary race with all four swimmers pulling out some incredible times. There will certainly be some pool deck bragging when Darren comes back! Special mention goes to 11 year old Tom Oates who stepped up for this race. Congratulations everyone! The teams were:
- 15 & Under 200m Freestyle (Girls) – Tahi Webster, Sammy Gregory, Tiana Ornelas and Bella Rocher
- 15 & Under 200m Freestyle (Boys) – James Trigazis, Marc Ornelas, Marcel Kocbek-Malepa and Tyrone Salomon
- 15 & Under 200m Medley (Girls) – Tahi Webster, Sammy Gregory, Tiana Ornelas and Bella Rocher
- 15 & Under 200m Medley (Boys) – James Trigazis, Marc Ornelas, Tom Oates and Tyrone Salomon
- 12 & Under 200m Medley (Girls) – Charlotte Fletcher, Scarlett Deas, Tiana Ornelas and Bella Rocher
Celebrating Success External Meets
August also saw some stunning swims by our junior swimmers at the JX Meet. AKAC was represented by Jessie Oates, Tom Oates, Tiana Ornelas, Isabella Rocher, Tahi Webster, Chloe Houseman, Charlotte Fletcher, Alexandra Deas and Scarlett Deas.
Back from injury Alex did some wonderful swims with a top five finish in the 200m Breaststroke. Scarlett placed 2nd in the 100m Breaststroke and secured a State time for the State Championships in January. Charlotte placed 1st in the 100m Backstroke, 2nd in the 50m Backstroke and 2nd in the 200m Backstroke also securing a State qualifying time. Chloe Houseman did an amazing swim in her 200IM knocking off almost 20 seconds and had a top five finish in the 50Mm Butterfly. Jess Oates had some smashing swims finishing in top 10 spots and doing an amazing time for her first ever 200m Backstroke and knocked off 14.5 seconds in her 100m Freestyle. Tom Oates placed 1st in the 200IM, 2nd in the 200m Backstroke, 3rd in the 50m Freestyle and 3rd in the 100m Backstroke and also secured a State qualifying time for January. Bella Rocher came 1st in the 50m Fly, 2nd in the 200m Freestyle, 2nd in the 50m Freestyle, 2nd in the 100m Fly and 3rd in the 100m Backstroke and Tahi Webster placed 1st in the 50m Breaststroke, 1st in the 50m Freestyle, 1st in the 100m Breaststroke, and 1st in the 50m Fly and 2nd in the 200m Breaststroke.
I know that was a long list of achievements but there were outstanding results from all swimmers and all worthy of a mention. Well done AKAC.
AKAC Social – Save the Dates
We have a few things planned for end of year festivities and we’d love for you to join us:
Sunday 29th November – Jamberoo – some of the kids thought an outing would be fun and a water fun park seemed the ideal location for kids and adults. It will also serve as a bit of an end of year get together, a chance for them to let their hair down. We’ll send details around in mid-October so we can arrange a group booking. We have picked a date that has no swimming carnivals and we are hoping is early enough to avoid the festive season rush.
Friday 4th December – Final Race Night and AKAC Presentation Night- Venue TBC
Many parents and kids have started eating out after Friday Race Nights. All are welcome to join us. Check your emails close to the dates for venue details and if you know of restaurants that are yummy, nearby and take bookings of approx. 25 people please let us know.
*Note that these dates have changed since last newsletter so update your diaries.
AKAC Fundraising
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the chocolate fundraising drive. We have some surprisingly talented sales-kids in our club! For those who haven't paid their $50 yet, please see me (Sarah – Charlotte’s mum) ASAP or deposit straight into the club account so we can send what we owe to Cadbury. When we finish we will have raised $300 which will go towards the Presentation night for Club members. Thanks to Alex Ornelas for organizing it.
We’re raising money for the club so that we can pay administration fees, buy equipment, buy caps and arrange events such as the Interclub Challenge and Presentation Day. Over the next few months we’re planning:
- A cake stall (date TBC)
- Club Photos – we have a brilliant photographer in our mix that is happy to take shots of our kids in action – stay tuned for details and please send through any other ideas.
AKAC Club nights
Our next Club Night is Friday 9th October and we’ll be running:
- 400m Freestyle
- 25m Freestyle
- 50m Backstroke
- 50m Breaststroke
The 25m races are for our younger swimmers (10 and under) if they don’t feel ready to try the longer races.
Entries are due in the Monday before we race i.e. Monday 5th October by 6pm. Please make sure you get your race cards in early so that things run smoothly on the night. Race cards and money (in an envelope so we know who has paidJ) go in the locked wooden box on the table near the window in reception.
We’d love to see you all there so please use the entry form at the end of this newsletter or grab one from the table near the window in reception. There is a small fee ($5) to enter. We charge this fee to cover the costs of AKAC caps, ribbons, and trophies and to subsidize uniforms and equipment. However, we are running a free trial for all Bronze Squad Members for October. See the AKAC website or noticeboard by the pool for more details.
New swimmers are welcome to come along for a trial (or two) but please note that for those who enjoy the thrill of competition and want to compete on a monthly basis, after two trial swims you will need to join the Annette Kellerman Swim Club and be registered with Swimming New South Wales. This is a Swimming New South Wales regulation and it is for insurance purposes

Joining our club – 2016 Registrations are open
Registrations for 2016 are now open. All existing club members will be sent a renewal email from New South Wales Swimming. All potential new members have been sent an email and can join up via the New South Wales Swimming website.
The AKAC Club is small but it is a close-knit community with a great bunch of parents and kids. There is wonderful team spirit amongst all of the kids who support each other in training, in competitions and outside of the pool – socially. Being a part of this club is a really special experience and we love to extend our swimming family and invite new members to join in the fun. There are lots of great benefits to being part of the club for swimmers and parents whom:
- Have the opportunity to form long lasting friendships with other swimmers, parents, officials, coaches etc as part of a team, especially at club nights or at other club carnivals, while participating in a sport they enjoy
- Receive a New Member Kit on arrival to your club – a welcome pack for new members including parent information booklets, personal best time record booklet, nutritional information, a welcome letter signed by an elite athlete, a swim cap and mesh bag
- Experience a new level of competition at club, area, state and national level - At the very least it is great practice for school carnivals!
- Get opportunities to participate in development training, special events and offers including the Junior Excellence program of recognition
- Receive exclusive Swimming NSW Speedo Shop Discount upon presenting a valid membership card at the Speedo Swim Shop in Sydney Olympic Park
- Have the opportunity to develop essential life skills to survive amongst Australia’s water friendly culture

It's hard to believe that another month is almost gone and winter is well and truly here... I
imagine that it is rather hard for some of the kids and parents to be getting up for those early
morning sessions in the cold but please keep trying because morning squad numbers are
down and we're at risk of losing some of the flexibility we all take for granted. On those tough
days think of two things - the coaches are here waiting for you and... Read More

Our first Club Night under the new format and I think all who participated would say that it was a success. Our youngest competitor (8 years) was Leo Cosgrove who put in an extraordinary effort to swim his first ever 50m Butterfly. Well done! We also had some 9 year olds who did some fantastic swims and all of them get a special mention for their great efforts -– Will Houseman, Chloe Pankhurst and Jamie Robertson did some fantastic times. A special welcome also for Adam Khalil who joined in on the night and, did some very fine swimming! Read More
