Interclub Challenge – Fast, furious and fun
I am going to apologise in advance because I have plagiarised Megan’s email (and added a few twists of my own) for this first article. Truth be told, her Interclub Challenge wrap was just too good to rewrite! Friday 4th August saw our inaugural Interclub Challenge against Col Jones Tempe. It was a great night with all of the swimmers and parents chipping in to make the night a huge success. Thank you to everyone for helping us out – all of the parents who volunteered their time and came along to cheer and of course thank you to the swimmers who swam so beautifully for their respective clubs. There were lots of PB's and some great cheering on of your team mates. The relay cheers almost brought the house down; especially in the under-12 boys relay teams who managed a photo finish!
I would also like to say a special thank you to Nyree Webster “Race Secretary” and Megan Wakeley “Secretary” who put the night together for us and a big thanks to Alex Ornelas “Co-Secretary” for sorting out the amazing trophy. Results for the evening can be found in the race night results section on the website but we’ve included some highlights here.
Overall results - It was close - Jones dominated the younger age groups and AKAC dominated the older age groups with fierce battles in the middle! AKAC won in the end.
Age champions - Age champions are those who got the most individual points on the night. Congratulations to:
• Boys 6 yrs - Lars Schuett (Jones)
• Girls 7 yrs - Brianna Merlino (Jones)
• Boys 7yrs - Hugo Payne (Jones)
• Girls 8 yrs - Kara Giardullo (Jones)
• Boys 8 yrs - Kesse Goodman (Jones)
• Girls 9 yrs - Ella Schuett (Jones)
• Boys 9 yrs - Jamie Robertson (AKAC)
• Girls 10 yrs - Abbey Connor (Jones)
• Boys 10 yrs - Chevronn Harjanto (Jones) and Harrison Tzanis (AKAC) tied
• Girls 11 yrs - Jessica Oates (AKAC)
• Boys 11 yrs - Thomas Oates (AKAC)
• Girls 12 yrs - Isabella Rocher (AKAC) and Charlotte Fletcher (AKAC) tied
• Boys 12 yrs - Matthew Robertson (Trinity - AKAC sibling)

• Boys 13 yrs - Tyronne Salomon (AKAC)
• Girls 14 yrs - Lucy Swan (Jones)
• Boys 14 yrs - Marc Ornelas (AKAC)
• Girls 15 yrs - Samantha Gregory (AKAC)
• Boys 15 yrs - Marcel Kocbek-Malepa (AKAC)
There were a couple more special extra awards and these were for:
1) Bravery - scared but he still swam - Lars Schuett - Bravo!
2) Never say die - no goggles or cap by the end but didn't slow down in the relay - Scarlett Deas
3) Most improved (pb's against seed times) - the 10sec plus PB club includes:
- Thomas Fleming (Jones)
- Tyronne Salomon (AKAC) - 39 seconds!
- Will Houseman (AKAC)
- Kate Swan (Jones)
- Ellenor Fleming (Jones)
- Jamie Robertson (AKAC)
- Abbey Connor (Jones)
- Alice Cagney (Jones)
The final score
Just so you know - points were awarded for your placing in each race by age group. The more races the more points. No points were awarded for the relays - these were just for fun (and AKAC had an unfair advantage in the 15 and under relays as we had older swimmers).
We then divided the club total of individual points by the number of people swimming from each club to get a per capita score and even out differences caused by uneven club sizes. The final point score was close and we look forward to the 2016 Challenge Cup next year. No doubt Jones will be fired up to beat us.
Celebrating Success External Meets
August (and late-July) has seen some magnificent racing from our swimmers out at SOPAC and the month isn’t even over yet. As I write this we have swimmers training hard for the JX Meet on Sunday 23rd August – the first chance for our swimmers to get long-course times.
In late July our swimmers competed at the Metro South West Carnival at SOPAC and we had some great results. Special congratulations go to Hilary Bretag – 3rd in the 50M Fly and 3rd in the 100M Fly, Scarlett Deas – 3rd in the 100M Breaststroke, Charlotte Fletcher – 3rd in the 50M Backstroke and 3rd in the 100M Backstroke, Sammy Gregory – 2nd in the 50M Backstroke and 3rd in the 100M Backstroke, Tom Oates – 1st in the 100M Breaststroke, Tyrone Salomon – 2nd in the 100M Fly, James Trigazis – 3rd in the 200IM and 2nd in the 100M Backstroke and Tahi Webster – 1st in the 100M Breaststroke and 3rd in the 50M Fly.
We also saw some great PB’s from Chloe Houseman, Jessica Oates, Marc Ornelas, Tiana Ornelas, Bella Rocher and Illia Tolstun. Well done everybody.
Last weekend the Windsor Development Meet was held at Homebush and we were thrilled to welcome Marcel Kocbek-Malepa to his first external meet. We again had some medalist amongst us and another batch of fabulous PB’s.
Congratulations to Marcel for a 3rd place in the 100M IM, Isabella Rocher – 2nd in the 100M Fly, 2nd in the 50M Fly and 3rd in the 100M Free, and Tahi Webster – 1st in the 50M Free, 1st in the 50M Breaststroke and 1st in the 100M Breaststroke. Well done to Charlotte Fletcher, Chloe Houseman, and Khloe Pardo who smashed some of their PB’s and swam some valiant 4th placings. We are offering either 50m or 100m in each stroke.
AKAC Social – Save the Dates
It’s hard to believe but the end of the year is approaching and we have a few fun things planned. We’d love for you to join us on:
Sunday 29th November – Jamberoo – some of the kids thought an outing would be fun and a water fun park seemed the ideal location for kids. It will also serve as a bit of an end of year get together, a chance for them to let their hair down. We’ll send details around separately for a group booking.
Sunday 13th December – AKAC Club BBQ and Presentation Day - Venue TBC
Many parents and kids have started eating out after Friday Race Nights. All are welcome to join us. Check your emails close to the dates for venue details.
AKAC Fundraising
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the fundraising on the Club night. Special mention goes to Sammy Gregory who provided us with the beautiful poster for our guessing competition and the accompanying lolly jar. We raised $700 for our efforts. We have a number of fundraising events coming up and we’d love you to help us out. We’re raising money for the club so that we can pay administration fees, buy equipment, buy caps and arrange events such as the Interclub Challenge and Presentation Day. Over the next few months we’re planning:
- A chocolate drive – we’d love you all to take a box and sell to friends and family
- A cake stall (date TBC)
- Club Photos – we have a brilliant photographer in our mix that is happy to take shots of our kids in action – stay tuned for details and please send through any other ideas.
AKAC Hoodies
The rumour is true! We’re ordering club hoodies and they are going to look fabulous. The kids voted at the last meet and purple hoodies with the AKAC logo won. This time we will only be buying for those who have ordered and paid in advance and we will not be holding any stock. The order forms are out and orders are due in at the end of August. If you haven’t got a form please see Alex O or Megan.
AKAC Club nights
Our next Club Night is Friday 4th September and we’ll be running:
• 200m IM
• 25* and 50m backstroke
• 25* and 50m butterfly
The 25m races are for our younger swimmers (10 and under) if they don’t feel ready to try the longer races.
Entries are due in the Monday before we race i.e. Monday 31st August by 6pm. Please make sure you get your race cards in early so that things run smoothly on the night. Race cards and money (in an envelope so we know who has paidïŠ) go in the locked wooden box on the table near the window in reception.
We’d love to see you all there so please use the entry form at the end of this newsletter or grab one from the table near the window in reception. There is a small fee ($5) to enter. We charge this fee to cover the costs of AKAC caps, ribbons, and trophies and to subsidize uniforms and equipment.
New swimmers are welcome to come along for a trial (or two) but please note that for those who enjoy the thrill of competition and want to compete on a monthly basis, after two trial swims you will need to join the Annette Kellerman Swim Club and be registered with Swimming New South Wales. This is a Swimming New South Wales regulation and it is for insurance purposes

It's hard to believe that another month is almost gone and winter is well and truly here... I
imagine that it is rather hard for some of the kids and parents to be getting up for those early
morning sessions in the cold but please keep trying because morning squad numbers are
down and we're at risk of losing some of the flexibility we all take for granted. On those tough
days think of two things - the coaches are here waiting for you and... Read More

Our first Club Night under the new format and I think all who participated would say that it was a success. Our youngest competitor (8 years) was Leo Cosgrove who put in an extraordinary effort to swim his first ever 50m Butterfly. Well done! We also had some 9 year olds who did some fantastic swims and all of them get a special mention for their great efforts -– Will Houseman, Chloe Pankhurst and Jamie Robertson did some fantastic times. A special welcome also for Adam Khalil who joined in on the night and, did some very fine swimming! Read More
