June 2015 - Newsletter to Squads
The AKAC Swim Club would like to invite you to some exciting events coming up. In particular to our Interclub Challenge against local rivals, Col Jones Tempe. Marrickville pride is at stake and we would love your support, particularly in the pool but if not cheering us on.
We also have some regular club nights coming up and you are welcome to come and trial if you have not been before.
We have reduced the cost of joining the club as much as Swimming NSW will allow us to, so that you can JOIN NOW!
Save the date – Friday 7th August – Interclub Challenge
We are delighted to be running our first invitational meet on Friday 7th August at 6pm. We will be racing another club in the area - Col Jones Torpedoes from Tempe. This will be an "official race night" which means that our swimmers will all have their times recorded and uploaded on to the Swimming New South Wales database. These times can be used as qualifying
times for other external meets.
The cost of entry is $10 because it is an official meet. This will include 2 raffle tickets worth $5 and covers 5 races and a relay. This is a bargain compared to other external meets that often charge at least $6 per race for official times.
We are offering either 50m or 100m in each stroke and a 100m medley. We have restricted swimmers to 5 races only with only and a relay, as 5 races in race conditions in a short meet will be exhausting and if swimmers did more races they would struggle to marshal for both events.
Please note that to race on this night you will need to be a member of the club. We have reduced the cost of joining as much as Swimming NSW will allow us. We are running a "Join in July" campaign especially for you so you can compete on the 7th August. Joining any time from now will be $60, which lasts until the end of September. Renewal on 1 October is $90 for 1 year.
There is much pride at stake here, we'd love to hold the inter club champions trophy at the end of the night so please join up and come along! :)
Event entry forms will be emailed to all club members soon – so please let us know as soon as you have joined up so you don’t miss out on the mail out – aksc.thesecretary@gmail.com
How to Join
Click on the Join Now button on either the AKAC Swim Club website or on the Swimming NSW website. Please note that parents should also be members and can join for $25. This too is a NSW Swimming regulation.
New website
AKAC has a new website. We will regularly update it with news and events so please check it out. http://akac.swimming.org.au
Club Nights
Our next Club Night is Friday 4th September and we’ll be running:
- 200m Individual Medley
- 25m and 50m Backstroke and
- 25m and 50m Butterfly races.
The 25m races are for our younger swimmers (10 and under) if they don’t feel ready to try the longer races.
We’d love to see you all there so please use the entry form at the end of this newsletter or grab one from the table near the window in reception. There is a small fee ($5) to enter. We charge this fee to cover the costs of AKAC caps, ribbons, and trophies and to subsidize uniforms and equipment.
New swimmers are welcome to come along for a trial (or two) but please note that for those who enjoy the thrill of competition and want to compete on a monthly basis, after two trial swims you will need to join the Annette Kellerman Swim Club and be registered with Swimming New South Wales. This is a Swimming New South Wales regulation and it is for insurance purposes.
Entries are usually due in the Tuesday before we race. However this July our race secretary is away so the entry deadline is Sunday 5th July 6pm, so she can enter them onto the computer before she goes. Please make sure you get your race cards in early so that things run smoothly on the night.
Race cards and money (in an envelope so we know who has paid) go in the locked wooden box on the table near the window in reception.
Joining our club
There are lots of great benefits to being part of the club for swimmers and parents whom:
- Have the opportunity to form long lasting friendships with other swimmers, parents, officials, coaches etc as part of a
team, especially at club nights or at other club carnivals, while participating in a sport they enjoy
- Receive a New Member Kit on arrival to your club
- a welcome pack for new members including parent information booklets, personal best time record booklet, nutritional
information, a welcome letter signed by an elite athlete, a swim cap and mesh bag

It's hard to believe that another month is almost gone and winter is well and truly here... I
imagine that it is rather hard for some of the kids and parents to be getting up for those early
morning sessions in the cold but please keep trying because morning squad numbers are
down and we're at risk of losing some of the flexibility we all take for granted. On those tough
days think of two things - the coaches are here waiting for you and... Read More

Our first Club Night under the new format and I think all who participated would say that it was a success. Our youngest competitor (8 years) was Leo Cosgrove who put in an extraordinary effort to swim his first ever 50m Butterfly. Well done! We also had some 9 year olds who did some fantastic swims and all of them get a special mention for their great efforts -– Will Houseman, Chloe Pankhurst and Jamie Robertson did some fantastic times. A special welcome also for Adam Khalil who joined in on the night and, did some very fine swimming! Read More
