July 2015 Newsletter
Celebrating Success
Time has flown very fast this last month and again we have some fantastic news about our Club Swimmers. There were a number of meets over June/July and we’ve had lots of our swimmers smash their PB’s, compete at Metropolitan Championships and qualify for the upcoming State Championships. In fact I am writing this from the Metro South West Championships where many of our swimmers are winning medals and swimming some amazing time (stay tuned for those results in the next newsletter...
We’ve also had two great club nights and preparations are underway for our first Interclub Challenge against Col Jones, Tempe Torpedoes. We’d like to welcome some new members to the club. Welcome to Marcel, Ben, Tim, Natalie and Stephanie, who are all signed up and ready to swim. We look forward to seeing you at Club Night! Also welcome to coach Felix who has signed up with the club as a non swimmer (so far – come on Felix into the water!)
We’ve also had one of our swimmers Tyrone Salomon go on a Water Polo training camp in the U.S over the July holidays. Whilst there he was lucky enough to meet and watch one of the top US College teams play – University of Southern California. In his spare time, Julian (Tyrone’s Dad) squeezed in some sightseeing and managed to find the Annette Kellerman star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Sadly we’ve had one of our swimmers out with injury (sustained in another sport) and illness. We wish Alex Deas and Khloe Pardo speedy recoveries.
Winter Results
2015 Metsea Winter Championships
Our swimmers had some great results at the Metsea Winter Championships. Of particular note are some extraordinary Pb’s. Special mention goes to: Sammy Gregory who did six pb’s smashing her 100m IM by 7.83 seconds, Chloe Houseman who did a 4.89 pb in the 100m backstroke, Marc Ornelas did an outstanding pb of 22.83 seconds in the 400m freestyle and a huge 9.87 pb in the 200m breaststroke, Tiana Ornelas did a 3.89 second pb in the 50m fly and Jamie Robertson also did a 4.35 second pb in the 50m fly. We also had some medal placings and want to say big congratulations to James Trigazis who came 2nd in the 50m and 100m breaststroke (as well as a huge Pb in the 100m freestyle) and Tahi Webster who came 2nd place in the 50m and 100m breaststroke as well as 4th place in the 100m IM. A special mention goes to Tom Oates who placed 4th in the 100m breaststroke.
2015 NSW Metropolitan Short Course Championships
We had five swimmers compete at the NSW Metropolitan Short Course Championships and this in itself is a huge feat. Some of the qualifying times are even tougher than State times so to get there is something they are all very proud of. Congratulations to Bella Rocher, Scarlett Deas, Sammy Gregory, Tom Oates and James Trigazis. Bella and Scarlett both pulled off some wonderful Pb’s in their respective races.
2015 Carlile Speedo Cup
We had more medalists in the Carlile Speedo Cup. Congratulations to Sammy Gregory who placed 2nd in the 100m backstroke, James Trigazis – 3rd in the 100m backstroke, Tom Oates – 3rd in the 100m breaststroke, Tahi Webster – 2nd in the 50m breaststroke and 2nd in the 100m breaststroke and Scarlett Deas – 2nd in the 50m breaststroke and 3rd in the 100m breaststroke. A great effort by all of you. Congratulations to all other competitors - Hilary Bretag, Alex Deas, Charlotte Fletcher, Chloe Houseman, Lucy Molineux, Jessie Oates, Marc Ornelas, Tiana Ornelas, Bella Rocher and Illia Tolstun. All swimmers performed beautifully on the day but more importantly had fun together. It was a great day out at Homebush.
Interclub Challenge - Col Jones vs AKAC Friday 7th August
We are delighted to be running our first invitational meet on Friday 7th August at 6pm. We will be racing another club in the area - Col Jones Torpedoes from Tempe. This will be an "official race night" which means that our swimmers will all have their times recorded and uploaded on to the Swimming New South Wales database. These times can be used as qualifying times for other external meets.
The cost of entry is $10 because it is an official meet. This will include 2 raffle tickets worth $5 and covers 5 races and a relay. This is a bargain compared to other external meets that often charge at least $6 per race for official times.
We are offering either 50m or 100m in each stroke. Swimmers can choose which of these times they need most. We are also offering a 100m medley. We have restricted swimmers to 5 races only with only 1 race per stroke, as 5 races in race conditions in a short meet will be exhausting and if swimmers did both distances they would struggle to marshal for both events.
Please note that to race on this night you will need to be a Member of the club. We have reduced the cost of joining as much as Swimming NSW will allow us. We are running a "Join in July" campaign especially for you so you can compete on the 7th August and we are in the last few days of the sale!. Joining any time from now will be $60 which lasts until the end of September. Renewal on 1 October is $90 for 1 year. There is much pride at stake here, we'd love to hold the inter club champions trophy at the end of the night so please join up and come along! :)
How to Join
Click on the Join Now button on either the AKAC Swim Club website or on the Swimming NSW website. Please note that parents should also be members and can join for $25. This too is a NSW Swimming regulation.
New website
AKAC has a new website. We will regularly update it with news and events so please check it out. Please check it out at http://akac.swimming.org.au
Club nights
Club nights are getting bigger as are the social events afterwards. Last month we all headed to Victoria Yeeros for a much appreciated kebabs and a glass of wine. It’s a great way for both kids and parent to unwind.
Our next Club Night is the InterClub Challenge on Friday 7th August. We would love to see you all there either swimming or cheering on the AKAC swimmers. We are calling for volunteers to help us on the night so please let the secretary know on thesecretary.akac@gmail.com. We are about 5 people short so will be volunteering you if you don’t get in first.

Fundraising
We have a number of fundraising events coming up and we’d love you to help us out. We’re raising money for the club so that we can pay administration fees, buy equipment, buy caps and arrange events such as the upcoming Interclub Challenge. Over the next few months we’re planning:
- A chocolate drive – we’d love you all to take a box and sell to friends and family
- A raffle – tickets sold and drawn at the Interclub Challenge
- A lolly jar guessing competition – to be run on the evening of the Interclub Challenge
- A cake stall (date TBC)
- Club Photos – we have a brilliant photographer in our mix who is happy to take shots of our kids in action – stay tuned for details and please send through any other ideas.
Hoodies
The rumour is true! We’re ordering club hoodies and they are going to look fabulous. The kids voted at the last meet and purple hoodies with the AKAC logo won.
This time we will only be buying for those who have ordered and paid in advance and we will not be holding any stock. So please keep an eye out for the order form and pay immediately. We expect to place orders in August. Final costs are not yet known but work on $50 each at this stage.
Upcoming External Meets
There are a number of meets coming up which are really good for junior swimmers who need to get times and for those still looking for short course State Qualifying times. For full details please see the NSW Swimming website: nsw.swimming.org.au and click on Training Events Calendar. Below is a list of carnivals that we know some AKAC swimmers have already booked into:
- August 2nd – Aquablitz Toongabbie Short Course Qualifying meet – SOPAC
- August 9th – SLC Aquadot 12 years and under mini squad SC Development meet – SOPAC
- August 15th - SOPAC SC Qualifying Meet

It's hard to believe that another month is almost gone and winter is well and truly here... I
imagine that it is rather hard for some of the kids and parents to be getting up for those early
morning sessions in the cold but please keep trying because morning squad numbers are
down and we're at risk of losing some of the flexibility we all take for granted. On those tough
days think of two things - the coaches are here waiting for you and... Read More

Our first Club Night under the new format and I think all who participated would say that it was a success. Our youngest competitor (8 years) was Leo Cosgrove who put in an extraordinary effort to swim his first ever 50m Butterfly. Well done! We also had some 9 year olds who did some fantastic swims and all of them get a special mention for their great efforts -– Will Houseman, Chloe Pankhurst and Jamie Robertson did some fantastic times. A special welcome also for Adam Khalil who joined in on the night and, did some very fine swimming! Read More
